Mrs. Mattie Barry

Obituary Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. Psalm 30:5 On March 8, 1925, in the Mississippi Delta, Tony and Estella were blessed with a baby girl, Mattie Lou. On Tuesday, May 15, 2012, she heard the voice of God call her home to rest from her labor. Mattie attended school in Indianola, MS (Sunflower County). She confessed hope in Christ at an early age and joined the Mount Pleasant M. B. Church under the leadership of Rev. R. L. Buder, where she was a member of the Usher Board and worked with the Youth. In later years, she moved to Columbus and joined the Zion Gate M. B. Church under the leadership of Rev. W. L. Clay. She served as a member of the Choir, Usher Board, Missionary Society, Willing Workers, and Sunday School. Ushering was her passion. Her exact words were, "I'm going to usher here on Earth until the Lord calls me home, and if there is anything like ushering in Heaven, I'm going to continue up there." There were many times when she didn't feel well, but she still stood her post. Mattie loved people. She had many people who called her "Mama." She was a peaceful person, and praise the Lord she died the way she lived, "peacefully." In 1943, she was united in holy matrimony to William Henry Barry. To this union, five children were born. Mattie was preceded in by her parents, her husband, one daughter, Mary Barry Cornwell, five brothers: Limmie West, Jimmie West, Timmie West, Lindsey West and Joe West, and two sisters: Ethel West and Estella West Ranson. Mattie leaves to cherish her memories, two sons: Eddie (Tippie) Barry of Columbus, MS and Eddie (Laydean) Byas of Indianola, MS; two daughters: Mattie (Robert) Sparks of Sandusky, OH and Martha James) Whitfield of Columbus, MS; a son-in-law: John Cornwell of Sandusky, OH; 15 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild; two sisters-in-law: Mary Frances Glass and Bessie Thomas; a special niece: Betty Jones; a special great niece: Kimberly West Washington; a special cousin: John (Helen) West; her children she adopted in her heart: Gladys (Robert) Morris, Willie (Margaret) Moody, Beth (Rich) Frank of Sandusky, OH and Samella DeGraffenreid; a friend of 50 years, Ms. Aretha Hendrix; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
