Michael Anthony Butler Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Michael Anthony Butler transitioned on December 22, 2020 at his residence. He was born on June 8, 1965 to R.B. and Izola Butler. Michael was always fun loving and tenacious. After enjoying a football career that included high school at S.D. Lee and college at EMCC and West Texas State, where he became a member of Omega PSI PHI Fraternity. He returned to Columbus and worked in Law Enforcement with the state tax commission and the Gov. Ray Mabus Task Force on Crime. But Michael’s public service extended to at-risk children and their families when he became a children’s therapist with The Back-On-Track program with Community Counseling Services. This work inspired him to found his non-profit youth program called Community Youth Service, providing family intervention, employment, academics, and recreational service. After moving to Jackson, Mississippi, he worked with the Welfare-To-Work programs, DHS, and Foster Parenting Services. He worked as a consultant until his retirement in 2014. After returning to Columbus, he joined Smith Chapel CME and served as Sunday School Superintendent. His life of service speaks for itself and lives on through his family, his children and his friends. He leaves to celebrate his life his devoted wife of 23 years, Sharon Butler; his children Jamaar Butler, Leila-Ann Butler, Bethany Butler, Tariq Butler, and Micah Butler; his sisters Beverly Gafree, Jean Jones, Carolyn Butler, Ann Brumfield, and Greta McGregory and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
