Sam Lawerence Sr. Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Visitation will be from 11-5 at Lee Sykes Funeral Home of Columbus. Graveside services will be Saturday 11 a.m. at Memorial Gardens Cemetery Sam Lawrence was the fourteenth of fourteen children born to Wilson Lawrence and Irene Johnson Lawrence September 7th, 1936 in Crawford, MS. Sam “Ba Be” as he was fondly called by his family was wed to Bessie Mae Brown to this union two children were born? His beautiful daughter and caregiver Elise Ray (Robert) Clark and his namesake Sam (?) Lawrence, Jr. all of Columbus, MS. He adopted three of his deceased sister’s, Georgia, children. Delois (Lee) Elliott and Lula Hanston of Columbus, MS and nephew John Ward, who proceeded him in death. He attended Moore High School and late relocated to Columbus and became employed at the age of eighteen with Columbus Buckyard for over fifty-seven years, where he helped many others before his retirement in 2011. He confessed Christ at an early age at Brownridge Baptist Church where he was baptized later, he united with MT. Baptist Church in Columbus, MS under the leadership of Rev. E.E. Heard. He was a faithful serving member by joining the mass choir, male chorus, a member of the trustee board, and ordained as a deacon. He was known for his singing talent and many would request to hear his voice. He also had been a member of the Golden voices for many years. He was a wonderful grandfather, he assisted in the baptism of his first great grandson. Brother Lawrence departed this life August 18. 2020 surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife, his sister Magie Love, thirteen grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and his nieces and nephews.
