Obituary for Jessie Smith Jessie Smith, age 75 received rest on Friday, December 29, 2023 in Tupelo, MS. Jessie James Smith was born April 5, 1948, to the late Peter Smith and Almotie Shelton Smith in Lowndes County, MS. He was educated in the County School System attending Crawford School and B. L. Moor High School. He confessed his belief in Christ at an early age, joining Union Chapel Baptist Church. He later joined Oakland M. B. Church in Crawford, MS and Morning Star Baptist Church in Kankakee, IL. He served as a member of the Usher Board for many years. Upon returning to Mississippi, he joined Antioch Baptist and Oakland M. B. Church for the remainder of his years serving as a member of the Usher Board, also serving a President for a time. He was employed at Preston Trucking Company in Bradley, IL, retiring after 27 years; and 15 years with the Lowndes County Road Department serving time as a Foreman until retirement. He volunteered countless hours with Supervisor/Coach Jeff Smith with West Lowndes High Girls basketball team some years but mostly with the GTA Stars AAU teams as a Basketball Coach, giving opportunities to the youth across the Southeast region of the country. On December 29, 2023, Jessie went home to be with the Lord. He was preceded in death by his mother Almotie Shelton Smith, father Peter Smith, son Rashard Jackson, a twin brother Frank James Smith, 11 brothers, and 2 sisters. He leaves to celebrate his life and cherish his memories: his children Jenifer Smith (Stevie) Stowers of Las Vegas, NV, Jeffrey (Frida) Smith of Columbus, MS, Karen Ware (Ken) Ford of Duluth, GA, Jermaine (Amber) Poe of Mesquite, TX and Calvin Jordan of Atlanta, GA; one sister Bernice Smith Calmes of Crawford, MS; two brothers J. W. (Essie) Smith of Kankakee IL and Peter (Shirley) Smith of Mason, TN; 9 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Visitation: Family and Friends Hour will be held on Friday January 5, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Lee Sykes Funeral Home Columbus Chapel located at 422 12th Street North Columbus, MS 39701. &#55356;�&#55356;�&#55356;� We welcome friends to Celebrate his life and legacy on Saturday January 6, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Charity Mission Church Bishop Bobby L. McCarter, Sr. presides 807 Tarlton Rd, Crawford, MS 39743 Interment: Oakland MB Church Cemetery in Crawford, MS Psalm 73:26: “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”♾️
