Kewanda Smith

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 26, 2021 noon until 5 p.m. at Lee-Sykes Funeral Home of Columbus. Services will be held Saturday, March 27, 2021 11 a.m. at Prairie Chapel Church. Kewanda Tenika Smith was born August 16, 1980 in Columbus, Mississippi to the late Mr. Mack Arthur and Mrs. Lula Bell Smith. “Nika” as she was affectionately called, grew up in Columbus with her parents and her siblings. She confessed her life to Christ at an early age and united with the Prairie Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Columbus, Mississippi. Her upbringing in church had a strong impact in her life and was the foundation of her faith. As a devoted Christian, she was a member of the choir where she used her sweet voice to glorify God through sung and praise. Kewanda was known amongst her family and friends for her inspiring character, huge “bigger than life” smile, positive loving attitude, and enchanting words of wisdom and encouragement. She was always an inspiration to others. She imparted her thoughtful and edifying words to not only family and friends but to many in conversations and through social media communications. Kewanda graduated from West Lowndes High School in 1998. She continued her education by attending Mary Holmes Junior College and received an Associate Degree in Science in 2001. Kewanda always had an immense desire for more knowledge, so she furthered her education by attending Mississippi State University and received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 2004. In 2005, Kewanda relocated to the Mississippi Gulf Coast where she worked for the Mississippi Department of Revenue for over 14 years as a Special Agent. While on the Gulf Coast, Kewanda made the Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church her new place of worship and continued to use her voice by singing in the “TAB” Choir. Kewanda enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, shopping, taking selfies…many selfies, and using social media. In 2009, she gave birth to her beautiful daughter, Kiersten Williams and instilled in her Godly values, to have faith, strength, a calm spirit, and show acts of kindness. Kewanda departed this life on Tuesday, March 16, 2021, at 10:23 a.m. At the time of her passing, she was surrounded by her brother and sisters when the angels of God came to escort our blossoming flower home for her heavenly rest. Nika as we called her, was a beautiful and wonderful young lady that was loved, will be tremendously missed, and will always be cherished. She is preceded in death by her parents Mark Arthur and Lula Bell Smith and older brother, Eric Henderson. Kewanda leaves loving special memories for her daughter, Kiersten Williams of D’Iberville, MS, her brother, Cornell (Kristi) Smith of Upper Marlboro, MD, two sisters: Renate Mitchell of Fulton, MS; Dwylia (Kenneth) Elliott of Starkville, MS; six Uncles: Fred Jennings, Sr. of Columbus, MS, Eugene (Bunetta) Smith of Fork Ft, IL, Houston (Maxine) Smith of Abilene, TX, Clarence (Mearion) Smith of Tupelo, MS, Norris Smith of Columbus, MS, and Melvin (Stephanie) Smith of Brandon, MS; four Aunts: Leola (Jessie) Sherrod of Columbus, MS, Annie (Clyde) Edwards of Columbus, MS, Shirlean (Roosevelt) Smith of Jackson, MS, and Mildred Gatewood-Smith of Columbus, MS, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
